- Course: a container for one subject or class — chapters, materials, and the students enrolled in it.
- Enrollment: the link between a student and a course. Enrollment is what makes reporting possible.
- Synchronous vs asynchronous: live classes at a fixed time versus material students work through on their own schedule.
- SCORM / xAPI: standards for packaging learning content so it works across systems (ADL, SCORM). Mostly relevant to corporate training, rarely to a tuition center.

Is an LMS the same as school management software?
No. An LMS manages learning — courses, classes, assessment, progress. School management software, sometimes called an SIS, manages administration — admissions, fee collection, payroll, transport, government reporting. Many platforms now do both, which is why the labels blur, but the distinction matters when you compare products.

Do small schools and tuition centers actually need an LMS?
You need one when coordination starts costing more time than teaching. The practical threshold is not a student count — it is the moment your teachers spend evenings re-sending material, chasing submissions, and rebuilding attendance from memory. If two or more of the signs below are true, an LMS will pay for itself in staff hours alone.
- Material is re-sent to individual students on request, every week.
- Attendance exists on paper, or nowhere.
- Nobody can say which students are falling behind until exam results arrive.

Does online or blended teaching actually work?

How do I choose an LMS? A short checklist
Choose by matching the platform to how your institution actually teaches, not by counting features. A twenty-feature comparison sheet almost always hides the four things that decide whether staff use the system at all: does it work on a phone, does it work on a weak connection, can a non-technical teacher set up a class, and does it handle local payments.
- Phone-first. Most Nepali students study on a phone. Open the demo on a phone before you open it on a laptop.
- Low-bandwidth behaviour. Ask what happens on a 3G connection, and whether class recordings can be watched later.
- Teacher setup time. If creating a course and a class takes more than ten minutes for a non-technical teacher, adoption will fail.
- Assessment depth. Assignments alone are not enough; you want quizzes and exams with automatic grading, because that is where the weekly time savings live.
- Local payments and currency. A platform billing in USD by card is a monthly friction for a Nepali institution.
- Data export. Ask how you get your courses, students, and results out. A vendor who cannot answer that quickly is telling you something.
- Support in your timezone. A class breaking at 7 a.m. Kathmandu time needs an answer at 7 a.m. Kathmandu time.

Roll out with one batch, one teacher, and one term — never with the whole institution at once. Migrations fail on adoption, not on technology, and a small pilot gives you a teacher who can train the rest from real experience instead of a vendor slide deck.
